Welty Environmental Center is located in Big Hill Park, a unique area filled with various habitat types: prairie, mixed-hardwood forest, and riparian wetland habitats. We can’t forget Goose Creek, a tributary of the Rock River at the base of the hill. Join Educator Darien Becker on Sunday, September 19, at 1pm to explore Big Hill during our Prairie to Tributary 5K hike!
The hike will be broken down into three loops, where each loop spotlights a different habitat type, and the trails have varying difficulties. You have the option of completing the full 5K (3.7 miles) or a section of it. Trail maps are available. Bring your binoculars and cameras if you have them because we’ll be looking (and listening) closely for birds, insects, plants, and other animals that live in these distinct habitats.
This event is part of the 2021 Welty Rock River 5K. Please register for the 5K before registering for this event (this event is free to those already participating in the 5K). Same-day sign-ups are not available.
