Join us Thursday evening for the opening of three Fall exhibitions:
Tierra Y Libertad, North Gallery
Curated by Ximena Mora Y Olivan ’12, Tierra Y Libertad highlights the work of modern and contemporary Latinx artists. Pieces like William Camargo’s Damn,Y’all Forgot Who Worked Here challenge popular narratives via public intervention and oral histories, and address racial disparities including gentrification and classism through intentional placemaking.
Day One DNA: 50 Years in Hip-hop Culture,
Hollensteiner and Neese
This exhibition is curated from the private collection of Ice T and DJ Afrika Islam by Laylah Amatullah Barrayn. The exhibition opens a personal lens on the early days and evolution of a genre that has become a dominant cultural vernacular in the U.S. and across the globe. Day One DNA celebrates Ice T and DJ Afrika Islam’s legacy while journeying through their creative process and influences that sustained their careers. The exhibition, part of which will be displayed at CELEB’s Gallery ABBA, raises public awareness, and educates audiences about the history of hip-hop and its interdisciplinary connections.
Voices of Art, South Gallery
Using various media, art can be a tool to mobilize, inform, and agitate. Today, art is one of the most effective ways to engage people to take risks, assume responsibility, and actively participate in their communities. Voices of Art explores the ways in which art has had and can have a message to foster social change.
Free and open to the public — refreshments will be served
