There is no better example of “What Beloit Made, Made Beloit” than the story of why and how the Rasey House was built in 1850. Beloit’s first citizens were determined to build a college in the fledgling city, but were short of funds to finish the first building, now called Middle College. So, they rallied together to build a home they could sell for a profit to help pay to complete it. They donated funds, labor and materials to build it. The limestone came from the Gage Brothers quarry which is now Krueger Swimming Pool. The cobblestones came from the bed of Turtle Creek, collected by Beloit College students. The sand used in the burnt lime mortar came from South Beloit. This home truly represents the spirit of “What Beloit Made, Made Beloit”, the theme of this year’s Beloit Heritage Days. The Rasey House is now owned and maintained by the Beloit Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. It is rarely open to the public, so we are grateful they are opening this remarkable house during Beloit Heritage Days.
