Join the Welty Environmental Center and like-minded nature enthusiasts for a field trip on the picturesque trail systems in Rock County. Join us for one or all four days, where we will bolster our map reading skills, hike, and engage in a scientific activity best suited to each location.
Monday – Big Hill Park is the 190-acre home of the Welty Environmental Center and historic features like the site of Wisconsin’s first ski jump and several Workers Progress Association projects from 1937. We will hike the park, inspect snake boards and bird houses, and conduct citizen science that will assist NASA.
Tuesday – Carver-Roehl Park’s trail system includes a tree identification scavenger hunt that we will complete. We will also learn how to estimate a tree’s age without cutting them down to count rings through circumference and by taking and looking at tree cores under a digital microscope.
Wednesday – Gibbs Lake has a wonderful trail system and access to the lake. We will learn the basics of how to measure water quality through simple chemistry tests and using nets from the shore to capture and identify macroinvertebrates.
Thursday – Magnolia Bluff (a designated State Natural Area) has some of the best lookout views in Rock County. We will hike to the eastern lookout where we can use binoculars (provided) to spot birds. We will learn the basics of bird watching and the use of a few free phone apps to assist us.
