Some of the important work done at Visit Beloit includes hosting a tasting of donuts in honor of National Donut Day!

Who doesn’t love a good donut? We do! And to celebrate, we invited friends and colleagues to try a variety of donuts from area bakeries.

We came to a few conclusions:

  1. It IS possible to eat too many donuts.
  2. It’s totally worth it!
  3. A favorite Beloit donut could not be chosen. Everyone had a different favorite, which tells you how many good donuts are baking around here.

One shop did turn out the highest number of favorites in Beloit, and a lot of winners hailed from Rockton. Read on to learn about our favorites!

One of the best and most unique donuts in Beloit is the Apple Hut’s Apple Cider Donut. This seasonal donut know as Fritz’s famous donuts, uses a traditional family recipe and marks the official start of fall in our books. The line for these fresh, mouthwatering donuts is literally out the Apple Hut’s door late August – October. Opening day of the Apple Hut is basically a local holiday because people are so excited for their donuts!

Danny’s Donuts

Danny’s Donuts
2627 Prairie Ave, Beloit, WI 53511

Danny’s Donuts is an unassuming Mexican bakery tucked away on the east side of Beloit that came out on top at our donut tasting. Their cinnamon and sugar donut was a big time crowd favorite and their chocolate frosting tasted so fresh it was hard to not just lick it off the donut. The bakery sells tons of other baked goods, especially authentic Mexican pastries.

The Mix

The Mix
151 Hawick St, Rockton, IL 61072

One bakery out of the adorable little town of Rockton, just 10 minutes south of Downtown Beloit, ended up surprising us the most. Not only did the prettiest donuts come from The Mix, but the donut voted best chocolate donut came from The Mix as well! It is a chocolate cake donut with chocolate frosting. And for more chocolate love, it is topped with tiny chocolate chips with shredded pieces of white chocolate. Check out their facebook page to see all their amazing donut designs.

Old Fashion Bakery

Old Fashion Bakery

Open since 1932, Old Fashion Bakery is a Beloit institution. They have all the classic donuts you could want and even more baked goods to choose from. You get a pretty awesome sugar rush just by walking into Old Fashion and smelling all their old school confections.

The Downtown Beloit Farmers’ Market continues to grow with over 90 vendors weekly selling local produce, organics, baked goods, honey, jams & jellies, herbs, bedding plants, fish, meat, eggs & cheese, fresh flowers, and artisan crafts, but most importantly, these incredible mini donuts made fresh to order! They come out fresh from the fryer and then shaken up in a bag with cinnamon and sugar, or you can have them plain. In addition, this little food truck also serves fresh lemonade and woodfire pizza!
