Recreational Marijuana is Legal in South Beloit, Illinois, NOT in Wisconsin
Recreational marijuana was legalized in Illinois on January 1, 2020. Just on the other side of the Wisconsin border in South Beloit, Illinois, Sunnyside Dispensary opened on July 11, 2020.
Recreational marijuana is still illegal in neighboring states, including Wisconsin.
If you’re coming from a state where marijuana is illegal, it will still be illegal if you bring it from Illinois. For example, if you are staying in Beloit and purchase a marijuana product in Illinois, it is illegal to bring it back to Beloit.
If found, you will be charged according to Wisconsin law regarding marijuana possession. It doesn’t matter if you buy it in Illinois legally.

If you are staying in South Beloit, Illinois and purchase marijuana:
There are limits to how much you can carry, depending on its form.
- Pot (Leaf form) – 30 grams of pot in leaf form is the maximum
- Edibles (brownies, gummies, etc) – 500 milligrams
- Cannabis concentrate (Oils, creams, etc.) – five grams in the cap
Additionally, you cannot smoke in vehicles or public places, including your hotel room.
